State Superintendent Backs Common Core

Jackson, Miss.
Incoming state school superintendent, Carey Wright, gives a strong endorsement to the new Common Core education standards and pre-kindergarten education.

Wright, a former District of Columbia and Maryland school administrator, was named Mississippi's next state superintendent last month.

She's scheduled to start work Nov. 11, but met with reporters Thursday at a news conference after attending the Board of Education's monthly work session.

Wright says she believes the multi-state Common Core standards, which have been under attack as a backdoor federal takeover of education, have been unfairly maligned and are a chance to improve learning in lagging schools.

She also says that state-funded pre-kindergarten, which Mississippi is just beginning to implement, could help students who would otherwise come to kindergarten behind their peers.
