Teenagers Get Encouragement at Young Men's Initiative

Meridian, Miss. Local young men were given a dose of encouragement and motivation Thursday night.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sponsored the Young Men's Initiative at the Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi. The event was for young men between the ages of thirteen and seventeen. Sorority members say it's an initiative designed to empower our male youth, teach them how to make good choices in life and provide positive male role models.

"We have a lack of mentorship at this particular time. Our city is struggling with the violence. We have increased rate in crimes, so we just want to be able to do something to bring about a change," said LaSaundra Roberts, co-chairman of the event.

Mayor Percy Bland, Councilman Dustin Markham and Police Chief James Lee all spoke at the event.
