Meridian, Miss. A local dance studio hosted a Zumbathon Thursday night to help raise awareness against domestic violence.
People came to Elegance Ballroom Dance and Fitness Studio in Meridian to dance Zumba for three hours. Local dance instructors volunteered for the event. The dancers were encouraged to wear purple, which is the color that promotes domestic violence awareness. All the donations for the event go to the Care Lodge Domestic Violence Shelter in Meridian.
"I started doing Zumba about two years ago, and I said you know I heard about Care Lodge and the things they do, and I said this is what I need to do," said Jessie Kennedy, a volunteer Zumba instructor. "This is part of my calling is to come out and help women who have been where I've been."
The Brickhaus Bar and Grill also gave anyone wearing purple ten percent off their purchases, and ten percent of their earnings Thursday night went to Care Lodge.
