Authorities say ten people were shot and killed late Tuesday afternoon in South Alabama.

Alabama state troopers say the suspect killed five people in a house in Samson and one each in two other homes, a store and a service station.

One official said the gunman drove down the street shooting at people on their porches. He then shot up a state trooper car and flying glass wounded a state trooper.

Authorities pursued him and he fired 30 rounds at them. Police say the gunman went inside a business outside Geneva where he once worked and continued firing. The Samson police chief was hit but saved by his vest.

The gunman then apparently shot and killed himself.
