Gilbertown, Alabama Multiple law enforcement groups and first responders participated in an active shooter drill at Southern Choctaw High School in Choctaw County, Alabama Wednesday.
The entire school took part in the drill. In this situation, children are instructed to get out of the school as quickly as they can. If they can not get out, they are told to hide or barricade themselves and try to keep a possible shooter away. Law enforcement conducts these drills to be prepared in case an incident happens.
"In rural Alabama, response is real slow, and I wanted to be able to inform the educators in the schools, and it's going to take time for us to get there," said Sheriff Tom Abate of Choctaw County.
Sheriff Abate says they plan to conduct several more training exercises in Choctaw County. He says things seemed to go smoothly, but he expected to find areas on which they could improve.
