Meridian, Miss. The President of a Georgia hotel development company told Meridian's City Council Tuesday night he hopes to break ground in 30 days for a major development in the City.
The President and Co-Founder of the Buford, Georgia-based Ascent Hospitality told council members he plans to build two Marriott hotels in Meridian, on land between Highway 80 and I-20 next to Cracker Barrell. One will be a Fairfield Inn and Suites, the other will be Townplace Suites, which is an extended stay hotel.
John Tampa is asking the city to provide access roads, and says the development will also include restaurants and office space, "
There will be an additional two restaurant pads, and also two office buildings," Tampa told Newscenter 11.
Mayor Percy Bland says it good news in many ways for the City of Meridian. "This is a big deal. Hopefully, the City Council, the Mayor's office, and the Planning Department can work to see what we can do." Bland added, "We'll probably also be trying to partner with the County on this, because this is a really big deal, and we want to do everything that we can to make it happen."
Tampa says he plans to have the first hotel open in April 2014, followed by opening the second hotel in the Fall of 2014.
