The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department and the U.S. Marshal service teamed up this week to put several people behind bars. The taskforce here in Mississippi is called the Gulf Coast regional fugitive task force, supported by the Attorney General's office and Meridian Police Department. It's a joint effort, and Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says they welcome the extra manpower.

"Day in and day out, we're answering calls, investigating crimes," he says. "So it's difficult at times to get together enough people to sometimes have the intensity to go looking for a lot of individuals at one time."

The sheriff's department had 75 outstanding arrest warrants when the marshals came in Wednesday. Over the past few days, the task force has located and arrested 11 of those individuals.

The U.S. Marshals are not restricted to the Mississippi state line like the Sheriff's Dept., and they have more technology that benefits them in tracking down these men and women and bringing them to justice.

That technology has also helped the task force assist the sheriff's department verify the location of over 200 registered sex offenders in this area.

"We have 223 individuals in Lauderdale County that we as a Sheriff's Department are mandated by law to be responsible to verify their information, which is a huge task, keeping up with that many people," Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says.

Calhoun says the majority of those offenders were found to be in compliance with regulations.
