RECONCILIATION WEEK CELEBRATION 2012

Reach, Relate, Respond

The 5th Annual Reconciliation Week Celebration will be held July 8 – 14, 2012. What began as a one day annual commemorative observance of the 2003 Lockheed tragedy expanded to a week long celebration in 2008. This year’s theme is “Building Community through Reconciliation.” The week’s events include:

Sunday, 7/8 – Reconciliation Service, 3:00 p.m.; 31st Baptist Church

Monday, 7/9 – Free Lemonade/Music, 9:00 am – noon; Dumont Plaza

Thursday, 7/12 – Rev. Charlie J. Miller Memorial Luncheon, 11:45 am, Union

Station; Dan Hall of Mission MS, speaker

Friday, 7/13 – Memorial Ride by Oxford Night Owls Motorcycle Club, 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, 7/14 – Day of Dialogue sponsored by Mission Mississippi, 8:30 am –

noon; location – Union Station

To celebrate the memory of the lives lost in the Lockheed tragedy of 2003, we will promote reconciliation in distinctive ways. We will reach out to those in need and hold events that allow the community to relate across racial lines in an effort to create a positive response. Our endeavors to reach out will include a donation to the South Harbor Homeless Shelter. For the third year, we will also award two deserving Lauderdale County graduates with Rev. Charlie J. Miller Memorial Scholarships in the amount of $300.00 each. In addition the Miller Family will pass out free lemonade at Dumont Plaza.

Thursday’s luncheon is an opportunity for relationship building. The lunch is designed to help establish and extend friendships to others of a different background. The speaker is Dan Hall of Mission Mississippi, an organization that promotes unity in the body of Christ across racial lines. Ideas will be shared on how we can respond to grow on a personal, professional, and economic level. On Friday, the Oxford Night Owl Motorcycle Club will lead a memorial ride from the Rev. Miller carousel horse to Forest Lawn Cemetery. The week will culminate with a Day of Dialogue forum sponsored by Mission Mississippi. It will be led by Neddie Winters, Mission Mississippi president.

Yellow and black bows will be displayed during the week at city and county offices. Bows will also be available to businesses or churches that make a donation of $50.00 or more.
