Posted: 5:47 AM Jul 30, 2012
Reporter: The Associated Press

Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge says the suspect in a shooting spree in the Shady Grove community is dead, along with his daughter, after a nearly 14 hour standoff came to an end around 5:30 a.m. Monday.

The suspect has been identified by the Jones County Sheriff's Department as 62-year-old Neil Newcomb.

Hodge says Newcomb's daughter, Michele Savell, was killed during the hostage situation.

Wounded were the man's son-in-law Timothy Savell and Newcomb's ex-wife Kathy Laterrade and an unidentified deputy sheriff.

Hodge says the incident began Sunday afternoon when deputies responding to a domestic dispute found Newcomb barricaded inside a home with several hostages.

Deputies were able to negotiate the release of the man's two grandchildren about 6 p.m. Sunday.
