Mississippi Recovery Team Returns

An emergency management team from Mississippi recently returned from helping Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts in New Jersey.

The team assisted with paperwork and logistics in Monmouth County where the coastline was devastated.

Team members Eddie Ivy and David Sharp, representing the city of Meridian and Lauderdale County, respectively, said the damage was not as widespread as Katrina was to the Gulf Coast. But the cost may be just as much.

"Everything there is so close to sea level that the water did go in for several blocks," said Sharp. "So you had houses that were flooded rather than washed away."

"I feel like we made a difference," said Ivy. "Our team went in with the goal of making a difference and we left thinking that although we made a difference, there's still a long way to go."

Ivy said the Mississippi Department of Health also had a team working in neighboring Middlesex County.

And the Mississippi Highway Patrol sent about 50 troopers to help with security in New Jersey. Mississippi also assisted in Maryland.
