NAACP, SPLC Looking into School Discipline
Meridian Public Schools will be the topic of conversation at a meeting taking place in Meridian on Monday evening.
The NAACP and Southern Poverty Law Center are hosting the meeting at EMEPA on Highway 39 North to discuss the severity of school discipline in the district. An attorney with the SPLC tells Newscenter 11 that students are being removed from school over minor offenses, therefore being deprived of their education.
"For all of those that are concerned about the children and families in Meridian who believe in this city's potential," SPLC attorney Shakti Belway says. "Those who would like to make things better or those who are concerned about the school discipline crisis and how children are being treated there, we encourage you to come out to this meeting."
The meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. on Monday at the EMEPA auditorium.
