If you plan on hitting the beach through the rest of the weekend, there are some things you need to know.
Park Rangers at Okatibbee Lake say swimming is allowed only in designated areas, and boaters need to stay well beyond the swimming areas.
Also, if you plan on celebrating with alcohol, it is not allowed in the beach areas, and law enforcement will also be patrolling the waterways looking for impaired boaters.
"The BUI laws are enforced by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks," says park ranger Mark Dean, "those laws are in effect and they are similar to the DUI laws you have on the roadways in Mississippi."
Since it's probably been a while since you've put the boat on the water, it's a good time to do a safety check.
"You want to check it real thoroughly," says Dean, "and make sure your life jacket is good, make sure you have one jacket for everybody on board, and that life jacket must fit."
With those guidelines in place, park rangers and law enforcement hope that folks will have fun, and be safe, this Memorial Day weekend.
