Luter Elected SBC President

History was made by the Southern Baptist Convention Tuesday afternoon in New Orleans.

Dr. Fred Luter, pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, was elected president of the SBC, becoming the first African-American to hold the position.

Under usual circumstances when someone is running unopposed for office, SBC members even take a vote.

That was not the case Tuesday. Attendees wanted to make sure that their vote was on the record for Luter.

There was a large contingent of people from east Mississippi and west Alabama in New Orleans for the vote.

Luter takes office Wednesday; he will serve one year, and then holding with tradition, will be elected to a second 1-year term.
