Alabama Researchers Receive BP Settlement

Posted: 2:31 PM Jun 10, 2012
Reporter: The Associated Press

Two Alabama researchers are getting $12.3 million in grant money from the BP oil spill court settlement and will use the money to improve health outreach programs on the Gulf Coast.

The Press-Register reports the grants to the University of South Alabama are the largest the school has received related to the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

Sociology professor Steve Picou will use his portion of the money to help train mental health workers to reach out to disaster victims.

Psychology professor Jennifer Langhinrichsen-Rohling will work with Mobile and Baldwin counties to strengthen support programs for people who lose jobs and income because of a disaster.
