Historic Districts Controversy Continues

Posted: 9:04 PM Jun 10, 2012
Reporter: Chip Scarborough

The Meridian City Council will be holding a special meeting on Monday evening to discuss the controversy surrounding the city's historic districts.

The meeting comes after Mayor Cheri Barry vetoed a moratorium approved by the council to block the distribution of building permits within a 100 block radius of the city's historic districts. Officials tell us building permits will continue to be handed out.

"So we have been able to give out permits if we needed to, up to the time she vetoed it," according to Community Development Director Connie Royal. "And with her veto, we can continue until another order is done. "

Monday's meeting on the historic districts is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Union Station on Front Street in Meridian.
