Post Office Changes

As part of a national effort to streamline the U.S. Postal Service, the mail processing plant at Meridian's main post office has been moved to Jackson.

In all, 15 clerks have been affected by the change. A spokesperson for the postal service out of Washington says six of those employees have already been placed in other jobs and three were given notice this past Friday that they will move to new jobs on August 11th. As for the remaining six clerks, the spokesman says they will remain at Meridian's main post office in jobs that were available due to attrition.

Postal Service spokeswoman Enola Rice stresses that although the processing center for Meridian's post office has moved, the post office itself will remain open!

Just this past weekend a last minute effort by the American Postal Workers Union to stop the consolidating and closure of dozens of mail processing plants failed. Over the next two months some 48 of these plants nationwide will be impacted by the consolidation effort.

Last year the U.S. Postal Service lost more than $5 billion dollars. This latest consolidation and closure initiative is part of an effort to reduce the size of the agency's workforce.
