McGrew Pleads Guilty to Charges

Posted: 3:37 PM Jul 24, 2012

After a trial started Monday in Kemper County, the defendant decided to plead guilty.

James Santonio McGrew was originally accused of capital murder and armed robbery in the 2010 death of Demetrius Smoot in DeKalb. Smoot was stabbed numerous times.

McGrew pleaded guilty to two lesser charges, manslaughter and grand larceny. He got 20 years for manslaughter and five for grand larceny, for a total of 25 years in prison.

Because McGrew is an habitual offender, he must serve the entire 25 years, without possibility of early release.
