Lauderdale County Schools Begin Classes

The sound of the morning announcements can only mean one thing, school is back in session. Students in Lauderdale County returned to classes Tuesday morning. And for Tammy Crowe at Northeast Elementary, it was also her first day as principal.

"Things are going great. Our enrollment is up. We have 1,009 children enrolled, and so it's been quite busy, but things have gone very well this morning. Parents have been very patient as they brought their kids and then patient with the bus drivers as we've gotten new routes and things going, but things have gone well," says Crowe.

At the middle school level at Northeast, the message to students as they gathered for an assembly by class level was to improve in every facet.

"We want to do better than we did last year, you know, in all facets," says Billy Burnham, principal of Northeast Middle School. "We want to be a better person; we want to have better extracurriculars; we want to raise test scores; we just want to be better in everything we did last year."

The high school message for Southeast students was similar. Principal Dwane Taylor wants to make sure students meet and exceed expectations inside and outside of the classroom.

"We have real high expectations for our kids academically, of course in the classroom," says Taylor. "We're hoping for a great athletic year too. We just hope our kids will have a good year's worth of growth and a good year's worth of teaching. That's our goal."

Students enjoyed getting the chance to interact with classmates, many of whom they haven't seen since the school year ended last year.
