Community Keeping Watch Following Recent Shooting

Members of the community are on alert after a drive-by shooting on 60th Avenue on Wednesday night.

Savannah Randle says the gunshots sent her running to her back door around 8 p.m. That is because she says she is simply not used to hearing gunfire at her 60th Avenue home. She says while she could not see anything, the sound was bad enough. Randle was surprised to learn that no one was shot.

"I know our patrolman are doing everything that they can," she says. "It's just something stronger needs to be done because you know, the kids and everything, they have just got out of hand."

A couple blocks over sits Oakland Heights Elementary School. While the shooting did not happen on school property or during school hours, it still has some parents thinking about their child's safety.

"The school does everything they can to protect our children," Vikki Malbrough says. "And as far as I'm concerned, this is one of the safest schools to have my child in. I never worry about her when she comes to school."

"I feel when he leaves my hands, I'm not even really sure what's going on," Kimberly Sanborn says. "And, I've started not wanting for him to go here because it's unsafe in the surrounding neighborhoods around the school."

School officials tell Newscenter 11 that all schools are safe and will continue to provide a safe learning environment.
