Reporter: The Associated Press

About 9,700 electric meters served by rural electric power associations were without service in south Mississippi Monday.

Ron Stewart, senior vice president of the Electric Power Associations of Mississippi, says the majority of the outages are in Forrest and Lamar counties.

He said emergency crews worked through the night and more crews were sent in Monday.

Stewart said the public should stay away from power lines at all times and to report damaged lines immediately to their electric utility.
