Bill Aims for Mississippi Filmmaking Incentives

Reporter: The Associated Press

Mississippi film officials are backing a bill that they hope can lure more big-budget movies to the state.

If passed, the bill would allow filmmakers to earn bigger tax rebates for salaries and individual productions.

Supporters say the economic impact of the 2011 film "The Help" on the city of Greenwood demonstrates the potential. Depending on the content of the film and its success, such productions can also boost future tourism.

While some argue that film incentives ultimately do not pay off for states, the success in Greenwood shows that local economies can prosper. Greenwood hotels, restaurants, antique stores, construction workers, actors and others benefited directly from the filming of "The Help." The city reaped about $13 million from the production.
