CCHS Student Hospitalized

Posted: 6:41 AM Apr 19, 2012
Reporter: The Associated Press

Authorities say one teenager is dead and another is hospitalized after being caught in the surf in Gulf
Shores.

Police say a 14-year-old boy died while swimming near the beach pavilion at Gulf State Park Wednesday.

16-year-old Shemarkus Spears, a sophomore at Choctaw County High School, was listed in critical condition after being caught in the surf while
swimming in the Gulf of Mexico several miles away.
Spears is captain of the football team at CCHS.

City spokesman Grant Brown says red flags have been flying for several days in Gulf Shores because of dangerous currents. Those
flags are a warning for people to stay out of the surf.
