Reporter: The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- Johnny Football just got a way cooler nickname--Johnny Heisman.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win college football's most coveted trophy.

Manziel passed for 3,419 yards and threw 24 TD passes for the Aggies, who will play Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl this season on Jan. 4 in Cowboys Stadium. In addition, Manziel was a dual threat. He ran for 1,181 yards, including 19 rushing TDs.

Manziel is the second player from Texas A&M to win the Heisman, and first since John David Crow 1957.

He broke 2010 Heisman winner Cam Netwon's Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 total yards this season, led the Aggies to a 10-2 in their first SEC season and orchestrated an upset at No. 1 Alabama in November

Manziel edged out Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o for the Heisman. Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was a distant third.

Manziel received 474 first-place votes and 2,029 total points in the balloting. Te'O had 321 first-place votes and 1,7-6 points. Te'o already had won the Walter Camp Award and Maxwell Trophy as the top college player in the country. He was trying to be the first defense-only winner of the Heisman.
