The Meridian Community College golf team has been one of the top teams in junior college golf for most of the 2011-2012 season. The team has broken several records along its path this season and Tuesday afternoon the Eagles made history. MCC fired a final round team score of 291 to erase a five-stroke deficit to defeat Brevard Community College in the District IV Championship Tournament in Coco Beach, FL at Rockledge Country Club. The Eagles finished with a three-round total score of 880 which defeated Brevard by eight strokes.
“I am extremely proud of the guys for battling and this is a great win for our program,” said MCC head golf coach Clinton Hales. “We didn’t have the best start to the tournament, but we fought back to play some great golf down the stretch.”
Sophomore Jake Sterling won the individual championship by firing a final round score of 71 (even par) to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Former Lamar standout Easton Key shot a final round score of 70 (1-under) to tie for fourth place in the field and earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Dylan Brown finished with a final round score of 74, while T.J. Morgan finished the tournament with a 76. Alex Grannon added a final round score of 77 for the Eagles.
This marks the first time in school history that MCC has won the District IV Championship at the Division I level and the first time the Eagles have had an individual champion at the District IV Championship. The All-Region Team was also announced at the conclusion of the final round Tuesday afternoon and four members of the MCC golf team were named to the squad. Jake Sterling, Easton Key, T.J. Morgan, and Dylan Brown were all named to the All-Region Team and this also marks the first time in school history that four players have been named All-Region in one season.
The Eagles have won seven tournament championships in 10 appearances during the 2011-2012 season. MCC is currently ranked number one according to the NJCAA Division I Golf Poll, GolfStat.com, and the GolfWorld/Nike Golf NJCAA Division I Coaches Poll.
Meridian has now qualified to play in the NJCAA National Tournament May 15-18 in Newton, KS at Sand Creek Station.
