WIMBLEDON-WEEK 2 Sharapova upset WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- The second week of play at Wimbledon is underway and the day got started with a big upset, as women's top-seed, Maria Sharapova (shah-rah-POH'-vah), was eliminated. The world No. 1 was beaten by 15th-seed Sabine Lisicki (suh-BEEN' lih'-SIH'-kee), 6-4, 6-3. The match took place in windy, rainy conditions. Sharapova was trying to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2002 to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. She won Wimbledon in 2004, and was the runner-up last year, when she beat Lisicki in the semifinals. Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki (noh-VIHT'-skee), who's also German, sat in Lisicki's guest box at Court 1. Women's sixth-seed Serena Williams advanced to the quarterfinals with a three-set win over Yaroslava Shvedova (yah-roh-SLAHV"-uh SHVEH'-doh-vuh). Williams cruised through the first set in windy conditions before the hard-hitting Shvedova found her rhythm in the second, breaking the American twice to even the match. Williams then wasted three break points at 4-4 in the third before eventually breaking for a 6-5 lead. She clinched the victory with a backhand winner on her first match point. Williams will next face defending champion Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-oh-vuh). In other key matches, women's second-seed Victoria Azarenka (ah-zah-REN'-kuh) defeated Ana Ivanovic (ee-VAH'-noh-vich), 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska (ahg-nee-ESH'-kuh rahd-VAHN'-skuh) also advanced, beating Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-3. In a final note regarding women's play, Kim Clijsters (KLY'-sturz) has played her last Wimbledon match, losing in straight sets to eighth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the fourth round. Clijsters, the winner of four Grand Slam events, is retiring after this year's U.S. Open and went out quickly on Court 3, winning just two games as Kerber overpowered her 6-1, 6-1. Kerber will meet Lisicki in the quarterfinals.
On the men's side of things, top-seed Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) didn't have any trouble with Viktor Troicki (TROY'-skee), winning 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. Third seed Roger Federer defeated Xavier Malisse (mah-LEES') 7-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Federer had to leave the court for a few minutes during the first set because of a back problem. A suspension of play didn't allow for completion of several other matches, including the Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (SAHNG'-guh)/Mardy Fish contest.
