BRITISH OPEN
Scott falters and Els wins
LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England (AP) -- Ernie Els has been crowned
champion of the British Open. The South African won the claret jug
by shooting a final round 2-under-68 to finish 7 shots under par.
That said, for Els to win, third round leader Adam Scott had to
self-destruct, and he did. Scott shot a final round 5-over-75 with
a round that was marred by seven bogeys, including ones on the
final four holes of play. Had he been able to shoot a par on the
final hole, a playoff with Els would have been in order, but the
Australian wasn't able to get the job done.
To get the win, Els had to overcome a six-shot disadvantage when
the final round started.
Tiger Woods skied to a 3-over-73 in the final round to finish
tied for third with Brandt Snedeker at three-under. Woods says his
day pretty much ended with a triple-bogey on the sixth hole.
The win by Els is his fourth in a major and second in the
British Open. His first win in the world's oldest major came at
Muirfield in 2002. He also won the U.S. Open in 1994 and 1997.

PGA TOUR-TRUE SOUTH
Stallings wins with tourney record minus-24
MADISON, Miss. (AP) -- Scott Stallings shot a 4-under 68 in the
final round on Sunday to win the True South Classic at Annandale
Golf Club.
The 27-year-old won his second career tournament and his first
in 2012, shooting a 24-under 264, which is a tournament record at
Annandale.
Jason Bohn shot a 5-under 67 to finish second, two strokes back.
Billy Horschel was alone in third at four strokes back.
Stallings jumped on top of the leaderboard.

GOLF-TAHOE CELEBS
Quinn pulls away from Rypien
STATELINE, Nev. (AP) -- Dan Quinn birdied three of his first
seven holes Sunday to pull ahead and then stretched his lead on the
back nine to earn a six-point victory over former NFL quarterback
Mark Rypien (RIP'-ihn) in the American Century Championship at
Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. The event uses the Modified Stableford
scoring system.
Quinn, a former NHL star, will caddie for Sunday's British Open
winner Ernie Els this week at the Canadian Open.

PENN STATE-FUTURE
Statue at Penn State removed...D-Day Monday on sanctions
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Shortly after Penn State tore down its
famed statue of coach Joe Paterno, the NCAA said it would impose
"corrective and punitive" sanctions against the university in the
wake of a devastating report that asserted top university officials
buried child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant
coach more than a decade ago.
The NCAA, acting with rare speed, said it will spell out the
penalties on Monday. The governing body did not disclose further
details.
If precedent holds from recent cases, Penn State will face a
loss of scholarships and a multi-year ban from bowl games -- and
with it, the financial windfall and showcase that comes with
postseason play.
Yet NCAA President Mark Emmert cautioned last week that he
hasn't ruled out the possibility of shutting down the Penn State
football program altogether, saying he had "never seen anything as
egregious" as the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.

MLB-LATEST SCORES
Getting to be a habit in Oakland...Orioles close within six of
Yanks
UNDATED (AP) -- The Oakland Athletics lead all of baseball with
11 walkoff victories. The latest came when Coco Crisp singled home
the winning run in the 12th inning of their 5-4 win over the New
York Yankees. That came after Seth Smith hit a tying homer in the
bottom of the ninth for the A's, who completed a four-game weekend
sweep.
Oakland improved to 14-2 in July, best record in the majors.
Meanwhile, the Yankees' lead in the AL East dropped to six games
over surging Baltimore.

In other AL action:
---- The Baltimore Orioles posted their fifth straight win, 4-3,
sweeping a three-game series in Cleveland. J.J. Hardy homered and
drove in three. Zach Britton pitched six shutout innings. Jim
Johnson got the final two outs for his 30th save in 32 tries.
----The Detroit Tigers, winners of 16 of their last 21 games,
completed a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-4
win, and in doing so, replaced the Sox in first place in the
American League Central. The Tigers got two home runs from Miguel
Cabrera (kah-BREHR'-uh) as Detroit wrapped up a 6-1 home stand
against the Sox and Angels. Detroit now leads Chicago by 1 1/2 games
in the Central. The second homer by Cabrera was the 300th of his
career.
-- Blake Beavan scattered four hits over eight innings and the
Seattle Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1. Jesus Montero and
Brendan Ryan each had an RBI double for the Mariners, who took two
of three from the Rays to finish a 5-2 road trip.
-- Toronto completed a three-game sweep of the Red Sox in Boston
with a 15-7 win. The loss dropped the Red Sox back in to last place
in the American League East. Brett Lawrie hit the game's first
pitch for one of Toronto's four homers as the Jays crawled out of
the AL East cellar.
-- Ryan Doumit homered from both sides of the plate and drove in
four runs to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 7-5 victory over the
Kansas City Royals. Hitting .354 in his past 26 games, Doumit also
had a two-run single with two outs in a four-run third to match his
career high for RBIs.
---- In the Sunday night game, the L.A. Angels are leading Texas
4-2 at the Big A. If the Angels hold on, they will cut the Rangers'
lead to five games in the AL West.

In the National League:
--The surging Pittsburgh Pirates racked up another win, this time
3-0 over Miami. The Bucs have won five in a row. Jeff Karstens
pitched seven innings for the Pirates and Pedro Alvarez homered.
The Pirates have completed four sweeps this season, all at home.
The Marlins have dropped five straight.
-- The Reds wrapped up one of the best home stands in club
history with a victory over 2-1 Milwaukee. Wilson Valdez drove in
the tying run and scored the go-ahead run to back the pitching of
Johnny Cueto (KWAY'-toh), who is 12-5. The Reds won 8 of 10 games
on the home stand and it's only the fifth time in franchise history
that Cincinnati posted at least eight wins on a home stand of 10 or
fewer games. In the NL Central, the Reds lead the Pirates by a half
game.
-- Washington beat the Braves 9-2 to split the key four-game
series they had in Washington. The win means the Nationals top the
Braves by 3 1/2 games in the NL East. Ryan Zimmerman homered twice
and drove in three runs for Washington, while Danny Espinosa and
Roger Bernadina each had three hits and two RBIs.
-- Lance Lynn of the Cardinals won his 12th game with six
spotless innings as St. Louis completed a three-game sweep of the
Cubs. Matt Holliday and Carlos Beltran homered on consecutive
pitches to put the finishing touches on the 7-0 win. The 12-5 Lynn
has allowed just one run in 19 innings his last three starts.
-- Jimmy Rollins hit an RBI single to lift the Philadelphia
Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants in 12
innings. John Mayberry Jr. hit two solo homers for the last-place
Phillies, and Nate Schierholtz hit a pair of solo shots for the NL
West-leading Giants. The five-time defending NL East champions are
10 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the wild-card standings.
-- The Dodgers scored five times in the top of the 12th inning as
they beat the Mets 8-3. The win gave L.A. a three-game sweep. The
Dodgers blew a 3-1 lead after the sixth but still won their fourth
straight after losing seven of eight and dropping out of first
place in the NL West.
-- Jason Kubel (KOO'-bul) homered for the sixth time in five
games, Chris Young added a three-run shot and the Arizona
Diamondbacks beat Houston 8-2 Sunday to complete a high-scoring,
three-game sweep of the staggering Astros. Kubel was coming off a
three-homer game Saturday night. He led off the second inning with
his 21st of the season.
-- Will Venable drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning
and Everth Cabrera had two hits and scored twice as the San Diego
Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2.

MLB-HALL OF FAME
"Ultimate validation" for Larkin and Santo
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) -- Barry Larkin and the late Ron Santo
have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Larkin was a
star for the Cincinnati Reds, while Santo played for the Cubs
before a long career as a team broadcaster. Larkin called admission
into the Hall the "ultimate validation" of his 19-year career,
all with the Reds.
Santo's widow, Vicki, gave a heartwarming speech and ended it
with: "This is not a sad day. This is a great day. I'm certain
that Ronnie is celebrating right now."
Santo died of bladder cancer in December 2010.
In St. Louis, the Cubs players paid tribute to Santo by clicking
their heels together as they jumped over the third-base line to
start the game.

MLB-NEWS
Nats' Desmond to the DL...New deal for Quentin
UNDATED (AP)-- Washington Nationals All-Star shortstop Ian
Desmond is going on the 15-day disabled list with a tear in his
oblique. Desmond has been trying to play through the injury, but an
MRI on Sunday revealed the tear.

In other baseball news:
-- Carlos Quentin and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $27
million, three-year contract covering 2013-15. The contract
includes a $10 million mutual option for 2016 which would have a $3
million buyout if he has 320 starts or more from 2013-15. Quentin
may not be traded without his consent, a protection that starts
immediately.

TOUR DE FRANCE
Britons finish 1-2
PARIS (AP) -- Bradley Wiggins has become the first Briton to win
the Tour de France, after safely protecting the yellow jersey
during today's final processional ride into Paris. He even helped
Sky teammate Mark Cavendish earn his fourth straight sprint victory
on the Champs-Elysees.
Wiggins secured his win with a dominating performance in
Saturday's final time trial to extend his already commanding lead.
Fellow Briton and Sky teammate Christopher Froome finished second,
3 minutes, 21 seconds behind overall. The last time two riders from
the same nation finished first and second in the Tour was in 1984
when Frenchmen cycled 1-2.

OLYMPICS-TEAM USA
US men struggle against Argentina
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -- The U.S. Olympic men's basketball team
wore the throwback uniforms of the 1992 Dream Team on Sunday. But
that was the only similarity.
Kevin Durant scored 27 points and the United States held on for
a narrow 86-80 victory over Argentina in an exhibition game.
The Americans got off to a hot start but their lead was down to
four with 2:50 left after Manu Ginobili's (MAN'-oo jih-NOH'-bleez)
three-point play. But Durant and Chris Paul hit big 3-pointers as
the U.S. won after being pushed for the second time in its four
exhibition games.
Kobe Bryant added 18 points and LeBron James 15 for the U.S.,
which beat Brazil 80-69 in a similarly rugged game last week in
Washington.
Ginobili scored 23 points, Carlos Delfino had 15 and Luis Scola
14 for Argentina.

NFL-EAGLES
Eagles DE Patterson ruled out of training camp
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) -- The Philadelphia Eagles have ruled out
defensive tackle Mike Patterson for their entire training camp and
possibly more because the incision where he had brain surgery in
January hasn't fully healed.
Patterson was diagnosed with a brain malformation last August
after suffering a seizure during a training camp practice at Lehigh
University.

NASCAR-NATIONWIDE
Sadler holds off Stenhouse
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) -- Elliott Sadler held off a charge by Ricky
Stenhouse Jr. on a green-white-checker finish to win the NASCAR
Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday.
Stenhouse appeared to have the stronger car and was chasing down
Sadler in the closing laps of the race. But a late caution bunched
up the field for NASCAR's version of overtime, Sadler got a push
from Justin Allgaier on the restart and pulled away.
Stenhouse finished second, followed by Allgaier, Kenny Wallace
and Michael Annett.

F1-GERMANY GRAND PRIX
Alonso wins again
HOCKENHEIM, Germany (AP) -- Fernando Alonso led from the start to
win the German Grand Prix (pree) in his Ferrari and extend his
Formula One championship lead. The Spaniard never had a big lead
but never looked in serious danger of losing it, successfully
fending off two-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel and Jenson
Button.
Alonso became the first driver to win three races this season
and has a 34-point lead over Mark Webber, the second Red Bull
driver who was eighth.

INDYCAR
Castroneves wins
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) --Helio Castroneves (EHL'-ee-oh
cas-troh-NEHV'-us) has tightened up the IndyCar Series points race
by winning at Edmonton. Castroneves had to hold off Takuma Sato
over the final 15 laps to pick up his second win of the season. The
win pushed Castroneves up to second in the standings, and he trails
leader Ryan Hunter-Reay by 23 points with four races remaining.

TENNIS
Roddick wins in Atlanta...Cibulkova first in Carlsbad
ATLANTA (AP) -- Andy Roddick beat Gilles Muller (zheel MUL'-ur)
of Luxembourg 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 to win the Atlanta Open and earn his
32nd ATP World Tour title. Roddick ranks third among active players
in career titles behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl
nah-DAHL').
After taking the Eastbourne title before Wimbledon, Roddick has
won two of his past three events and 11 of 12 matches. He will play
for the U.S. team when the Olympics begin next week at Wimbledon.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) -- Second-seeded Dominique Cibulkova
(see-buhl-KOH'-vuh) used her powerful ground strokes to defeat No.
1 seed Marion Bartoli 6-1, 7-5 and win the Mercury Insurance Open
title on Sunday.
Cibulkova won her second career title and first since October.

OBIT-JIM CARLEN
Former coach at WVU, Texas Tech and South Carolina dead at 79
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Jim Carlen, who coached South Carolina's
only Heisman Trophy winner and also led West Virginia and Texas
Tech to success, died Sunday. He was 79.
Carlen was 107-69-6 in his 16-year coaching career and had just
three losing seasons. He led his teams to eight bowl games.
