Send MPB Releases First Prep Poll

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) kicks off coverage of the 2012 high school football season with the release of the MPB Top 25 High School Football Poll.

The poll provides weekly rankings of the top 25 high school football teams in Mississippi.



Released each Tuesday during football season, the MPB Top 25 reflects the input of sports pundits and experts from across the state. Results will be posted at facebook.com/FNUTL.



High school football enthusiasts from across the state can tune in to “Friday Night Under the Lights”, airing on MPB Think Radio from 10 p.m. until midnight, for a recap of the week’s football action. For a fifteenth season, veteran host Russ Robinson and his MPB co-host Jay White will take calls from coaches, players and fans from across the state. Each week the pair provides lively post-game analysis and releases the MPB Top 25.

“The MPB Top 25 High School Football Poll is unique because it allows fans and voters to consider pitting schools public and private, big and small, against each other,” said White, MPB Sports Director. “So often these schools never run in the same circles. It’s great for all the football fans in Mississippi to do a little more than just imagine what it would be like these schools faced off.”



South Panola begins the 2012 season as the top team in the state. The Tigers received 20 votes out of a possible 30 first place votes. The Tigers finished the 2010 season ranked number one in the MPB Top 25.

Three other schools received first place votes. Defending MHSAA class 6A champion Olive Branch is ranked second, receiving five first place votes. Meridian is ranked third, receiving four first place votes. Finally, Biloxi received 1 first place vote and are ranked eighth.

The rest of the top 10 includes Starkville coming in at number four. 2011 MHSAA 5A Champion Picayune is ranked fifth. Madison Central comes in at number six. Lafayette County, who finished last season as the state’s top ranked team is listed seventh to begin this season. West Point and Wayne County round out the list at number nine and ten respectively.



Two independent schools were voted into the top 25. Jackson Prep was the highest among those, ranking sixteenth. Jackson Academy, winners of the MAIS’ top classification for three consecutive years, is ranked twentieth.-more-

Olive Branch has the largest enrollment of the 25 ranked schools with more than 1,900 students. West Bolivar, ranked 21st, has the lowest enrollment of the 25 ranked schools at just over 300 students.
