Monday Evening Weather Discussion
Posted: 8:10 PM Apr 9, 2012
Reporter: Stephen Bowers

There are few changes in the forecast from the previous few nights. High pressure to our west stacks about 40,000 feet tall and is helping to amplify a low pressure trough over the Northeast that has been nearly stationary for several days. Around that low pressure area have been cold fronts pivoting around its edges. One cold front moved through early this morning and brought clouds which cleared after the frontal passage. The next cold front will drive through our area overnight Tuesday and into the predawn hours of Wednesday. Clouds may thicken up a bit with the approach of the cold front late Tuesday and into Wednesday, but those clouds will likely clear quickly once the front passes. Moisture is not very abundant throughout the depth of the atmosphere, so any showers will be isolated if they occur. I certainly do not expect widespread rain with this overall uneventful frontal passage. High pressure noses down from the north late this week and slides eastward. As it does, the upper level portion of this high pressure ridge will slide into place. Between now and then the deep atmospheric wind flow will be from the northwest, which supports a little chill. When the high pressure ridge advances to the east, the deep atmospheric wind flow becomes more southerly, which will support some warming beginning Friday. As the ridge passes, a series of storm systems could move across our area beginning Sunday. Those storm systems could mean thunderstorms, and with a warmer and overall more unstable atmosphere we have to consider the possibility for severe thunderstorms with these passing systems. While some forecast output indicates this pattern could begin to bring stormy weather as early as Sunday, others are a little slower and hold off for at least another day or two. We will monitor the progress of things to adjust the forecast with time as necessary.

Tonight will be mainly clear. The low will be near 48. The wind will be from the north at less than 5 mph. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy. The high will be near 77. The wind will be from the west at 3-7 mph. Wednesday will become mostly sunny after morning clouds depart. The morning low will be near 49. The afternoon high will be near 71.
