Our temperatures have warmed slightly since a cold front brought a late season cool snap, but this warming trend is to be short-lived. High pressure to our west stacks about 35,000 feet high into the atmosphere. A jet streak, which is a small wind maximum, is rounding the northern edge of the high pressure ridge in the upper levels of the atmosphere. That jet streak will actually serve to intensify a low pressure trough over the East Coast. As the low pressure trough intensifies in response to the wind max entering from the west, the surface low pressure system that has been in no big hurry to leave the Northeast will drive another cold front through our area on Tuesday. While a few showers could occur, it's possible that most of us will notice little more than a few additional low-level clouds with this otherwise uneventful frontal passage through our area. The real story is behind the front. The high pressure to our west and low pressure to our east will work together to drive a reinforcing shot of cold air into the Deep South from Canada, and temperatures will take another big plummet and could be below normal for a change. In fact, some model output suggests some 30's for Thursday morning. This may be a little extreme for most of our area, but the coldest spots could easily see a 38-39 degree morning low on Thursday. The cool northwesterly wind flow that will persist throughout much of this week will become more warm and southwesterly on Friday and persist into the weekend. In response, our temperatures will warm noticeably, clouds will become a little more abundant, and thunderstorms will creep back into our forecast.
