A cold front drifting through the area tried to bring us some rain earlier this evening. It didn't accomplish much in the way of rain, but it did bring an increase in the cloud cover over our area. The cold front will pass through our area tonight, and after the frontal passage the temperatures will being falling off. High pressure behind the cold front that stacks all the way up to almost 40,000 feet is helping to cool the whole depth of the atmosphere, so our temperatures will be noticeably cooler on Wednesday and Thursday. Afternoon temperatures will be in the upper 60's and lower 70's both days while Thursday morning's temperatures could chill into the upper 30's. That high pressure is on the move and will set up to our east later this week as a trough carves into place over the West. Deep-layer southwesterly wind flow between the high pressure to our east and low pressure to our west will warm us considerably this weekend. That warming trend will begin Friday and pick up Saturday and Sunday. Along with increase in temperatures that begins Friday, humidity will also begin an increase. That will translate to more widespread cloud cover and perhaps some afternoon showers Sunday and Monday. A warm front west of us could help initiate thunderstorm development on Sunday. Other than pop-up showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, Monday will be quiet and warm. Low pressure will trek across the Central Plains and Midwest on Tuesday and drag a cold front through our area. Current forecasts for Tuesday indicate a jet stream pattern that favors severe thunderstorms. Building warmth and humidity from Friday through Tuesday also suggest building instability that also favors severe thunderstorms. That's certainly something we will be monitoring between now and then.
