Refreshing Start to the Weekend

Today was a fantastic day to sit outside, drive with the windows down, open up the windows in your house, and really just enjoy a day that brings back memories of April as opposed to being the first day of June. The cold front that brought the severe weather yesterday worked through our area this morning and afternoon, clearing out the skies and dropping temperatures 8-10 degrees below normal.

As the cooler air ushers into the area, we will also see lower humidity. Dew points are dropping into the lower 50s in northwest portions of Mississippi, and that air will make it here overnight, dropping our lows to the coolest we've been in quite some time.

The cool down will continue for Saturday, as we return to normal highs before the 90s return in full force on Sunday and Monday. As to why the late spring cool down, we can thank an anomalous trough that has made it further south than normal. Inside this trough is some Canadian air that usually doesn't make it to us this time of year. It is cool, dry, and refreshing.

This brief cool down will end Sunday as high pressure starts returning aloft, which will warm us right back into the 90s. This high pressure though will retreat west on Tuesday as another trough, or area of low pressure aloft, develops over the Mid-Atlantic States. This trough will send some slightly cooler air in our direction (or air we should have this time of year). Right now, it appears this air will linger until next Friday, when high pressure may reassert itself.
