Upcoming Storm Spotter Classes

The Choctaw County Emergency Management Agency along with the National Weather Service in Mobile will be hosting SkyWarn (storm spotters) classes on the following dates:

Basic SkyWarn class will be Monday, February 11, 2013 6-8 pm

Advanced SkyWarn class will be Tuesday, February 19, 2013 6-8 pm

Both classes will be at the Choctaw County Courthouse (large courtroom upstairs) in Butler, AL.

Both classes are free of charge and everyone is invited to attend.

Course Descriptions:

Basic SkyWarn class...This is the introductory course that describes the basic forms of severe weather, what NWS SkyWarn spotters do, basic spotting techniques, how to make reports to the NWS, and basic storm safety. The class is approximately 2 hours.

Advanced SkyWarn class...This course covers in detail storm structure, a more detailed look at tornado-genesis, parameters NWS Meteorologists look for to determine severe storm potential, basic radar meteorology, and an overview of tools used by experienced storm spotters. The class is approximately 2 hours.

Note: For the Advanced SkyWarn class, attendees will first need to take the Basic SkyWarn class to have a basic foundation for the more advanced topics that will be covered.
