Post Offices to Remain Open

The US Postal Service announced on Monday that it is delaying the closure of hundreds of urban and suburban post offices, including the West Meridian post office.

Newscenter 11 spoke to several postal customers who all said they are thrilled to hear the facility will remain open. A postal official told us off camera that the branch will even keep its normal operating hours.

Customers say they depend on the West Meridian location because of its convenience and are relieved they will not have to drive all over town to mail their items, especially with high gas prices. The long term future of the branch is still uncertain though.

Well, I think they can go back to like 4 days a week," Gerald Clark said. "Cut back to 4 days a week and let people have a job."

"Even if it is 4 days, that is better than nothing," Jolinda Moore said. "So I mean, you just have to what you have to do. If that's what they give you to work with, just have to make it work."

The post office has announced that it will keep some rural post offices open with limited hours. That could impact several rural offices slated for closure in this area, including Conehatta, Rose Hill and Paulding in East Mississippi. Bellamy, Nanafalia, and Ward are the West Alabama locations impacted.
