Marine Police spokesman Mike Coleman says the weekend explosion took place after the victim, who was not identified, refueled his boat at a fish camp on the Tombigbee River about 100 miles north of Mobile.
Coleman said the explosion caused the 40-footer to sink, and a second boat, a 20-footer, burned to the water line.
Coleman says the victim was thrown into the river and suffered burns to his lower extremities. He was taken to Grove Hill Memorial Hospital in Clarke County before being airlifted to University of South Alabama Medical Center.
