Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama says it is laying off four percent of its work force because of the downturn in the economy.

The company said Thursday the 151 job cuts would be mostly in the Birmingham area where most of its 3,800 statewide employees work.

The company offered early retirement to employees earlier this year and some took that option last month.

Laying off employees because of economic cutbacks is expected among corporations today, but whatever happened to common decency in the manner in which companies do this? They ask you for loyalty and a notice when you decide to leave, but it's okay for them to show up at your desk with a box for your belongings and an immediate dismissal. There should be some honor among companies toward dedicated employees with good work records. There should be some consideration for at least a heads-up to allow an employee preparations for being unemployed. At Blue Cross in Birmingham my daughter with twenty years experience left for vacation two days before the layoff and was notified of her termination by cell phone while with her children in Disneyland! Having a heads-up could have saved her all the expenses of her vacation, plus a week of vacation pay, not to mention emotionally destroying their vacation. Seems like the "Caring Company" doen't care much about their own people!
