For deputies with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's department this holiday weekend got off to a busy start Friday evening.
The first wreck of the day came in around 2 p.m. It was a two car collision that sent an infant and an adult female to a local hospital. Their injuries are thought to be minor, but with the heavy holiday traffic on the roads this accident should serve as a reminder for local drivers that caution is necessary.
"All of the deputies have been advised to be on the lookout for those who are going to parties or fireworks shows this weekend and try to drink and get back home," said Sheriff Billy Sollie.
But along with safety on the roads, Sheriff Sollie is asking local parents to watch their children closely when shooting fireworks.
"We don't need any forest fires this weekend and cause those firefighters to be called from their families over the weekend because someone was careless with fireworks," said Sheriff Sollie.
Additionally, through a contract with the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers the Sheriff's department will be patrolling the Okatibbee Lake area over the holiday weekend.
