Judge Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed Thursday by the U.S. Senate to a seat on the nation's highest court. The vote was 68-31.
Sotomayor watched the vote unfold on television at a courthouse in new York, among scores of friends and colleagues.
The 55-year-old worked in the building for years, first as a district judge and then on a federal appeals court. Sotomayor will be sworn in Saturday. She replaces
Justice David Souter, who has retired.
