Alabama's state health officer is asking businesses to offer employees flu shot clinics to protect against the standard form of the illness and to encourage swine flu vaccination too.
Dr. Don Williamson, who heads the Alabama Department of Public Health says a vaccine to protect against regular flu now could help Alabamians keep healthy and buy time until the H1N1 -- or swine flu -- vaccine is ready this fall.
He's asking businesses to encourage sick employees to stay home and not require employees to produce a doctors excuse for flu-like illness.
The disease is widespread in Alabama, but health officials say it has been mild and can typically be treated at home.
