Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry is expected to name former Meridian fire battalion chief as her pick to take over the role of fire chief.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Newscenter Eleven that Barry will ask the city council to confirm Anthony Clayton to the position. Clayton retired from the department earlier this year.

Newscenter Eleven spoke with Clayton who said he had no comment when asked to comment on the situation.

Barry refused to reveal her choice saying she wanted to wait and let the council make their decision before she went public with her choices to head the police and fire departments.

Congratulations Anthony Clayton for becoming Mayor Barry's newest appointee-please do your job and watch your back while doing it. Be sure to document everything you do and record every conversation you have with the CEO, Mayor, and Meridian's Leadership Council. Your life is now under a microscope. I pray you will be able to stand underneath the pressure.

MS Barry might want to ask the firemen of this city what they think of Mr Clayton before she appoints him. After all, they will be the ones that will have to serve with him. We don't need a mass exodus of firemen because of political favors. We already don"t have enough firemen like it is.

I don't have a problem with the new Fire Chief being black. From what I have heard of Mr. Clayton he is not a bad pick but I ask what is wrong with the current Chief other than he has contacts on the state and federal level that respect him. I have issue with her appeasment attitude. She will fire one African American and trade a qualified fire chief for an African-American to shut up the black community. Like they are that stupid. I doubt that she will appoint another African American even if they are qualified. She is trading a token for a token she has no intent on having diversity in her administration.

Sistah from Queen city: How can a bi-racial president be racist? What has Mr. Obama done that makes you feel like he is racist? I haven't heard one thing that he has said was only for one ethnic group. I can't believe that you said that! Some of you are so crazy; but I guess everyone is entitled to their own backwards thinking!

These comments are such an embarrassment for Meridian. I bet if the mayor was a man none of you would be saying these things.

fact the old chief was damn good.. his rep precedes him so yes he would be a good pick.... only ones making this a race issues are the well so called edumacted ones.. fact what was here has hurt this area.. tell me what good the old ways has helped .. downtown still floods.. only jobs pulled in are low pay... the only way the city can make money is attacking its neighbors... or taking over others and when they are out off office all the lies start to come out or not told information comes out like the 3 ft. project.. this is only the start my gut feeling is.. fact is you put race in front of the abilities of the people you loose on all levels...

According to you people: **She's faulted for firing an AA because she's a racist. **She hires an AA to keep people from thinking she's a racist. **She got into office because of big money backers but no one tells me how, exactly that works. The TRUTH is:She got elected by the largest box in the City. People who supported her got off their cans and actually did the unthinkable: they CAST a ballot. **She chose a majority of AA to serve on a panel to screen the applicants for School Board. That majority turned in the names THEY thought were the most qualified. They didn't know the name or race of the applicants. She chose 3..a White, a Black and a White. The Black chose to wait until March to go on the Board. Yet, you still claim she's a racist. Meridian IS a great place to live and work. Two major interstates runs through Meridian. If you didn't vote or you're not happy, pick an interstate and crank the car because you're not going to be happy when she's successful.
