A man who once worked at WTOK-TV was in harm's way last Thursday when Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan went on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Tex.

Maj. Kendrick Traylor, a former sales executive who then lived in west Alabama, described it as chaotic and terrifying.

"Inside this building, it's a one-way in, one-way out type of scenario," said Traylor by phone Wednesday. "So it was mass chaos. Individuals were screaming 'oh my god' in disbelief. 'I'm hit', as well, and just going and going."

Traylor has been serving in the Army for 20 years. He was just about to be deployed for his third trip to the Middle East. Traylor said it's a tragedy when anybody is killed. He said he's still having a hard time comprehending how people were killed on U.S. soil.

"It's really disheartening to see how this could happen or something like this could happen on an Army military base within the United States," Traylor said.

The thirteen dead and 29 wounded was definitely not something he expected to have happen here at home.

"It's just one of those things you never expect. You could never imagine something like this could happen. It's a state of disbelief and it's still a little shocking," Traylor said.

He said he is happy he will see his family again in Tuscaloosa. Traylor said he will always be thinking of the families of the Ft. Hood victims.

"My heart goes out with them, to them, and for them," he said.

Major Traylor said, now more than ever, the Army needs individual support from all over the nation.

Traylor is a member of the Alabama National Guard's 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. It is about 270 soldiers strong and will be deploying later this year.
