Senators Make Football Wager

U.S. Senators Richard Shelby of Alabama and Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas made a friendly wager Tuesday on the outcome of the Bowl Championship Series College Football National Championship Game.

Top-ranked Alabama plays #2 Texas Thursday in Pasadena, Calif.

Shelby wagered a whole smoked turkey from Bates Turkey Farm in Fort Deposit, Ala., that the Crimson Tide would bring home the championship.

Hutchison wagered a whole Greenberg smoked turkey from Tyler, Tex., that the Longhorns would take the title.

“This is a tremendous match-up between two of college football’s most storied programs,” said Shelby. “Coach Saban and Coach Brown deserve enormous credit for leading their respective teams to undefeated seasons and earning the right to contend for the national title. I know that Coach Saban will have the Crimson Tide fully prepared to compete with determination and represent the University of Alabama with class. I am pleased to enter into this friendly wager on the game with my colleague and friend, Sen. Hutchison, and I look forward to supporting the University of Alabama in Pasadena.”

Shelby holds an undergraduate and law degree from the University of Alabama. Hutchison received her undergraduate and law degree from the University of Texas.

“I am thrilled about Thursday night’s National Championship game between the Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide,” Hutchison said. “Both teams have legendary programs, undefeated records, numerous All-Americans, and two of the best players in college football in Colt McCoy and Mark Ingram. I congratulate Coaches Mack Brown and Nick Saban on their extraordinary achievements this season and wish them both good luck in what is sure to be an exciting and memorable National Championship game. I’m also excited about my friendly wager with my colleague and good friend Senator Shelby of Alabama. I’ll be cheering for my Longhorns in Pasadena and looking forward to them bringing home their second national championship in five years!”

The BCS National Championship Game will air on ABC and WTOK-TV Thursday. The preview show starts at 7 p.m. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
