Alabama's public school employees have paid $2 per month for health insurance since 1983, but that may soon change.
The board of the Public Education Employees Health Insurance Plan heard proposals Thursday for raising the monthly premiums and co-payments to cope with a $255 million shortfall in the new budget.
The board will vote in May on how to adjust charges for the state's new fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.
The shortfall resulted, in part, from the legislature level funding the health insurance program for the 2010-2011 school year in order to have enough money to save state-funded teaching jobs.
