The celebration included a tourism program at the welcome center, along with an open house and a special appreciation luncheon.
The theme was "The Year of Small Towns and Downtowns." Staff say this is a way to show their appreciation for visitors.
"This is just to make people in the region aware of what's going on in tourism, and also this is Memorial Day weekend and we are having visitors come through," said Linda Vice, of the Southwest Alabama Office of Tourism. "So we have taken this day to thank them for coming to the Sumter Welcome Center. "
The tourism speaker was state Sen. Bobby Singleton of District 24.
