Greg Griggers, district attorney for the 17th Judicial Circuit of Alabama, received 56% of the vote in Tuesday's Democratic Primary.
The unofficial total from three counties, Sumter, Marengo, and Greene, showed Griggers with 8,697 votes to 6,736 for Barrown Lankster, who formerly served in the post.
Election officials say the numbers include ballots cast, including absentees, but not provisional ballots. Those will be counted next week.
