The longtime suspect in the death of Natalee Holloway has been arrested in connection with the death of another young woman, Stephany Flores.

Joran van der Sloot was taken into custody in Chile Thursday. He's a suspect in the death of a young woman in Peru earlier this week.

The death occurred five years to the day after Holloway vanished on her senior trip to Aruba.

Van der Sloot was arrested but never convicted in that case.

Holloway lived in Birmingham. Her father Dave, lives in Meridian. Newscenter 11 was unable to reach him for comment.

Van der Sloot has also been charged in Alabama with trying to extort $250,000 in return for disclosing the location of Holloway's body.
Fox News' Greta van Susteren reported that the extortion victim was Natalee's mother, Beth Holloway.

The criminal complaint against him was filed Thursday in federal court in Birmingham by the U.S. attorney.

It accused van der Sloot of promising to describe the circumstances of Holloway's death as well as the location of her remains in return for the money.

Van der Sloot has long been a suspect in the 18-year-old Alabama woman's disappearance.

According to a sworn statement, van der Sloot got a partial payment of $15,000 wired to a Netherlands bank.
