A spokesman for the Alabama Republican Party says most counties should begin Tuesday recounting the votes in the primary for governor.
But party spokesman Philip Bryan says it will take more than one day to get a recount statewide.
Third-place finisher Tim James decided Sunday night to push ahead with his request for a recount.
Attorney General Troy King issued an advisory opinion Friday saying the top two finishers, Bradley Byrne and Robert Bentley, should appear on the runoff ballot July 13 and a recount could be used after the runoff to file an election contest.
But now King says his advisory opinion was for the secretary of state, and neither James nor the Republican Party are required to follow it.
