Prisons spokesman Brian Corbett said the Alabama Department of Corrections asked the Supreme Court to delay the execution because Holman Prison Warden Tony Patterson is to participate in mandatory training the week of Sept. 2.
The Supreme Court decided Tuesday to delay Wood's execution until 6 p.m. Sept. 9.
The 50-year-old Wood was sentenced to die for the 1993 shooting death of his former girlfriend, Ruby Lois Gosha. Gosha was shot in the head with a shotgun as she slept at her home in Troy.
Court records show that Wood has an IQ under 70.
