Alabama and Mississippi marine resources
officials are moving up the opening of shrimping season.
The Press-Register reports that the water is warmer than normal for this time of year and a lot of small brown shrimp are moving into coastal estuaries.
Shrimping season will open at 6 a.m. Wednesday, about two weeks earlier than usual.
Test trawls last week showed that the average size of brown shrimp was at or above the 68-shrimp-per-pound count needed to legally open the season.
Brown shrimp make up about 75 percent of the total shrimp catch, and revenue, in the two states.
Alabama Marine Resources Director Chris Blankenship, who is also program administrator for the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission,
said that with red snapper season opening Friday, Alabama waters will be very busy.
