Montgomery, Alabama The Alabama Legislature could use its last meeting day to authorize the borrowing of $280 million through state bond issues.
The bond issues awaiting a final vote Monday would affect school security, reconstruction of tornado-damaged schools, the construction of National Guard armories, and the purchase of school technology equipment and electronic textbooks.
Gov. Robert Bentley says that's a lot of borrowing, and he doesn't know whether all of it will be done. Senate Budget Committee Chairman Trip Pittman said low-interest rates make bonds attractive for some expenses, but sometimes it's better to pay as you go.
