An Associated Press analysis of early returns Tuesday night showed the retired Tuscaloosa physician defeating Democrat Ron Sparks.

Bentley ran on a platform of not taking a salary as governor until Alabama's unemployment returns to normal. He also proposed using tax breaks to create jobs and promised to call a special session of the legislature to enact ethics laws.

Bentley will replace two-term Republican Gov. Bob Riley in January. His victory is the sixth by the GOP in the last seven elections for Alabama governor.
